[Hack] How a hashtag helps us identify each of our users?

So, recently we launched an app TagWag which is an AI-powered app that automagically suggests you captions and hashtags based on the images that you upload.

Being product savvy, the immediate question that came to our mind before we launched the app was what would be our KPIs? How do we measure if the app is performing as per our expectations or not? How do we know whether users are posting our captions and hashtags on social media or not? If yes, then how many number of users are posting? An average number of posts per user? The highest number of posts per user, the lowest number of posts per user, etc etc.

Since we do not have a login feature on our app, we were trying to figure out how we could capture the above data at a user level so we can give them a personalized experience on the app and also understand how our app is performing from captions and hashtags perspective, if users are satisfied with the results or not. So we came up with an out of the box and a simple idea wherein while recommending hashtags to our users, we just added #tagwagai in between so that when the user copies hashtags, #tagwagai also gets copied along with it and gets posted on social media.

We also wanted to derive the total number of posts posted on different social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. This is how we got the number of posts.

Number of posts on Instagram using TagWag app

With this approach, we were able to identify our users and power users both at a post level without making them logging into the application or without even building the login feature. Once we have identified the users, we could send them personalized push notifications or personalized captions based on their Instagram posts. We could also profile them and understand their interests based on the posts on their Instagram account.

This was the small but impactful hack that gave us immense insights about our users and the app usage!

You can download TagWag from Google Play & App Store
