We came to realize that Tech professionals aren’t in it only for the money.
They are searching for a company with a purpose where they can create things big enough to put them on the map. As a company, It’s not easy to survive — the true challenge is to thrive. In the midst of it all, the people are those who make the company, and their growth is imperative.
We talked to Duna on this topic, trying to get insight on what it’s like to have an up and running company in (Macedonian) Tech for 25 years and to steer clear in this ever-changing Tech world.
They’ve started putting computers together when they first appeared in Macedonia. They started liking nice brands, so they started selling Apple, Marshall, Garmin, B&O. They provided cash registers to help the country conduct fiscal politics. They organize events that are supported with cool tech. They got into software. They have an NGO for socially responsible activities. They’re problem solvers who approach companies with innovative solutions for outdated problems, to help them elevate their business.
Q1: What do you believe is the core of Duna that makes it a great company to work at? Why should a Tech professional choose Duna as their next workplace?
‘Well, maybe not all share the feeling, but we’re kind of proud that we’re а local company, trying to improve other local businesses and promote our economy. We don’t adapt to the market by setting lower standards, because we believe that we should enjoy the global trends and take advantage of the technological advancements, here in Macedonia as well.
The core value of Duna is the diversity of its product and service portfolio, and that cross-functionality works really great for curious people. Just because you’re a developer, doesn’t mean that you don’t want to express your creativity with a cool event conceptualization. We’re all interconnected and we work on solving real problems close to us.’
Q2: What are the values Duna represents and why?
‘Bravery. Comradery. Curiosity.
We never bow down to challenges. We believe that there is always more than one way to solve a problem.
We’re always here for each other, and you know a teammate will step in when you need support, even if they are from a completely different sector.
We’re curious and we like to explore different territories — countries, businesses, industries, brands, technologies.’
Q3: How can Tech companies help talents find their purpose in the company and start feeling like home?
‘We really love when people take ownership of the projects and feel it as their own. You can really feel the commitment when people treat their work as their baby and grow it into something bigger. Then the team bonds get stronger because people feel they work towards joined purpose and see the bigger picture. So I guess our advice for talents is to look for the bigger picture. What are you contributing to with your work? Who are you making happy, how are you helping? Your work is never isolated and your input really does matter.’
Q4: Diversity in Tech teams is something that creates an environment for a fresh perspective, constructive feedback, positive unpredictability, and growth. What is your outlook on Team Diversity? How do you diversify the workplace?
‘Haha, we get to think about this question only when we’re asked, and then we realize that we’re pretty good at it. It happened last time on Women’s day when we realized that without even trying we’re almost totally gender-balanced, taking tech and managerial positions in mind.
We’re as diverse as our country when it comes to the employees. But most of all we’re diverse in mindsets and specialties, so you really get to learn something new from something unrelated to your field. This really taps into the creativity of individuals, because you get to apply completely different perspectives. Also, our team members are encouraged to participate in discussions and share ideas for the projects of different sectors, so people are happy to use their creativity and be very interlinked.’
