Facebook introduced a new integration with 3D posts which allows people to see and interact with different objects from a 360º perspective in the News Feed. 3D images are instantly responsive to touch, making the content “pop out” and allowing objects to be viewed from different angles. The functionality, in addition to amusing and impressing, is a good option to show various perspectives of environments and products, in a single image.

How about trying to create interactive images for your audience? We prepared a quick tutorial:

Step 1

You must have some 3D modeling software on your desktop, like Cinema 4D or Maya, but you can also use Windows Paint 3D, which is much more intuitive and simple for users who have no experience with 3D modeling. If you do not have Paint 3D on your computer, you can download it here.

Step 2

Create your 3D post in the modeling software, keep it simple, your final .glb model must have 3mb or less, and export the file with the extension .FBX

Step 3

You will need to download one of the tools released by Facebook itself to convert this .FBX file to glTF format. Download the corresponding tool for your operating system here. Place the tool in a folder along with the .FBX file you saved from your 3D modeling software.

Step 4

Simply drag the .FBX file onto the file “FBX2glTF-windows-x64.exe”, and it will convert your file to the glTF standard. The tool will create a folder named “filenameout_out” with 2 files, a buffer.bin and another file with the .gltf extension.

Step 5

Drag these two created files to the GLB Packer site, which was also indicated by Facebook, and it will download a file named out.glb.

Step 6

Now, you only need to upload to Facebook as a normal post and choose a background for your 3D model.

TIP: If something goes wrong, try the process with a simple template such as a cube or a textureless pyramid to test. As the new format has been recently implemented, there are still many limitations to the properties of the 3D models accepted by Facebook.
