June 23, 2022, Solana Mobile introduced a flagship blockchain phone ‘Saga’ and Solana Mobile Stack (SMS), a software toolkit for Android that enables web3 apps on Solana to instantly sign transactions while keeping the private keys partitioned from wallets and the operating system.

According to Solana Mobile, Saga will be available in early 2023 at a price of around $1,000, and these are the three initial main features that we should be looking at:

  • Seed Vault for keeping private keys safe in your phone
  • Mobile Wallet Adapter & Solana Pay
  • Web3 version of the App Store — dApp Store

Seed Vault and Mobile Wallets

The Seed Vault is a secure environment that stores the user’s private keys and seed phrases. What makes it so powerful is that it can keep the keys safely separated from the applications and yet still interact with the apps to instantly sign transactions. Along with this, the Mobile Wallet Adapter, a system that connects native Android apps to wallets, will make it easier for developers to build and expand the functionalities of dApps that were previously limited in the past. In addition, Solana pay, a new decentralized payment protocol, will also be built into Saga. Thus, the Seed Vault provides security, while the Mobile Wallet Adapter and Solana Pay acts as a bridge between the Web2 and Web3.

dApp Store?

To this day, Google and Apple’s app stores haven’t evolved anywhere close to Web3, nor have they provided any roadmap regarding this. The app stores are more than ever centralized, taking profit from mobile developers, and acting as an intermediary between the creators and users. This is perfectly normal in our Web2 society, but to decentralize and bring back power to the creators and users, a dApp store for Web3 apps needs to be implemented to our mobile environment. And this is the reason why Solana Labs, the parent company of Solana Mobile, is putting $10 million towards financing dApp development on the Solana Mobile Stack. The Solana dApp Store will allow developers establish direct relationships with the users without Google or Apple collecting personal data and taking app store fees of up to 15–30%. (There is 0% platform fee for the dApp Store)

So What?

Many large companies such as HTC, LG, Samsung tried to sell a blockchain phone in the past but did not succeed. However, people today require a better way to make Web3 transactions on mobile, an easier way to carry digital assets, and an environment where Web2 and Web3 apps can co-exist for a smoother transition to a decentralized ecosystem — many aspects as well as the atmosphere have changed in the blockchain industry today, and Solana Mobile’s Saga just might be the game changer for the mobile Web3 industry.

“Everything is going mobile. In most countries, most of the access happens through mobile phones — but crypto mobile is behind the times. The best solution for this is having the actual wallet built into your phone” — FTX exchange CEO Sam Bankman-Fried
