In May of this year we were delighted to announce that we had funded a total of 100 grants. Now, just over six months later, we have doubled that number; we have now surpassed our 200 grants milestone!

A lot has happened since then, and the ecosystem is thriving.

Since our grants program started in December 2018, we have received a total of 512 applications, of which 219 were accepted; 201 have already signed their agreements. To date, 69 teams have already completed their projects and 112 have successfully delivered their first milestone. See all the grants accepted here.

Building the Internet of the Future

Our mission at Web3 Foundation is to nurture cutting-edge applications for decentralized web software protocols. Our passion is delivering Web 3.0, a decentralized and fair internet where users control their own data, identity and destiny. With that in mind, all the projects we fund are open source, particularly related to Polkadot. It’s exciting to support so many great teams who share our vision.

Projects Funded

The projects funded to date cover all layers of the Web3 technology stack. Almost half covered runtime modules and development tools. The remainder included wallets, UI development, tooling, cryptography, bridges and more.

The teams are working on a wide range of decentralized use cases, including digital identity and privacy, IOT, supply chain management, games, and finance, among others.

A Global Community

A network is nothing without its community and the Web3 community is truly global. This is reflected in the geographical spread of grants: 18.2% of the teams are in China, 11.6% in the USA, 8.8% in Russia, with others ranging from Australia and Japan to Europe.

General and Open Grants

We are continuously accepting new applications. Our recommendation is to prepare a thorough roadmap and then choose the grant type that suits you best:

The General Grants Program — our original program running since December 2018 — offers funding of up to $100k (administered in fiat). The application system allows teams to submit their request without revealing information on their project publicly.

The Open Grants Program provides a quick and efficient way for teams looking for funding of $30k or less (administered in cryptocurrency) to apply. Applications and the review process are completely transparent and take place entirely on Github. Approval has been granted in as little as 24 hours using this track. Launched in January 2020, this program has become increasingly popular, as the chart below indicates. In November alone we signed almost one grant per day via the open grants program.

In order to scale the open grants program and keep the process flowing, we allow for external milestone evaluations. See here for more details.

Unfortunately scams are very common in the crypto space. With the growing popularity of Polkadot and Kusama, we are also seeing a rise of imposters trying to scam our community.
