We are thrilled to announce the conclusion of Wave 19 of the Web3 Foundation Grants Program! In this wave, we have approved 33 grants amounting to over $1.1 million in funding. This wave has been particularly busy: we received a total of 100 applications in the last quarter, the largest amount in more than two years. During this time, we also signed our 600th grant and processed the 1000th milestone. The continued growth and strength of the Polkadot developer community, now the second largest globally after Ethereum, is a testament to the remarkable passion and innovation of the teams building within this ecosystem. The Grants Program has played a significant role in empowering these teams and attracting new developers, helping make Polkadot’s community one of the most vibrant in the Web 3.0 space today. We continue to be amazed by the projects contributing to the Polkadot tech stack and are committed to supporting the next wave of innovations through our accessible, transparent, and open grants program.

Recipients 🚀

One standout trend for this wave is the number of tooling grants aiming to improve smart contract capabilities. As ink! smart contracts on Polkadot gain further traction, we are seeing increased interest in building developer tools to enable faster and more secure contract development. More specifically, these grants are focused on testing, analyzing and improving the developer experience when interacting with ink! smart contracts. Another trend we see are projects including data analysis, such as outlined in the Data Analysis Tools and Analytics Platform RFPs, which are currently being worked on by 3 different teams.

We also signed several grants related to core Polkadot infrastructure like wallets, chains, and pallets. It’s great to see continued enhancement of fundamental components that will benefit the entire ecosystem.

Similarly to the previous wave, we’ve seen an impressive number of grant proposals that come in response to RFPs (Request for Proposals). The RFP list is continuously evolving and we’re always open to new proposals. Some topics we’re currently interested in include formal verification, anti-collusion mechanisms, cross-chain messaging and account security.

We maintain a list of all accepted applications on our grants repository here, but for a better reading experience feel free to head to our web-based UI instead.

Apply Now!

As the Web 3.0 ecosystem expands and evolves, we continue to welcome new proposals. Applying for a W3F grant is as simple as submitting a pull request to our grants program repository. For inspiration, an overview of projects in the ecosystem, and broad project ideas we’re interested in funding, you can take a look at our open-source tech stack.

The best way to get your proposal accepted is to outline a comprehensive roadmap. Going over our guidelines, as well as the application template, will give you a general idea of what we look for in a grant application.

If you’re unsure if the Grants Program is right for you, or whether other ecosystem-native programs might be a better fit, you can watch our talk on how to Get Your Project Funded, which we gave last month in collaboration with the SBP at Sub0 2023, the Polkadot developer conference — it covers all aspects of getting funding and support in the Polkadot ecosystem.

For more information on how to apply and for tips on putting together a great application, check out the README and FAQs in our grants program repository on GitHub. We look forward to receiving your application!

Work with us!

The grants program aims to be as open and accessible as possible. If you’re interested in contributing or getting involved, there are several ways you can do that:

  • We are open to milestone evaluations from third parties. If you’re particularly interested in a certain project, or particularly knowledgeable on a relevant subject, submit your own evaluation.
  • We encourage anyone to submit a request for proposals (RFPs). If you find that there is something missing in our ecosystem (a tool, a project, infrastructure, etc.), that we could help fund, please submit an RFP.
  • Join us! We’re currently looking for a Site Reliability Engineer to join us full-time. Check out all our current job openings and apply!

We strive to continue improving our grants program and are always open to feedback. If you would like to share any suggestions or criticism, please reach out to us on Github or Element!
