Neurobiology: 2 hemispheres

As human beings, we have 2 hemispheres:

  1. The first one is responsible for exploratory mechanisms, but is not particularly good at executing things precisely and immidiately. Especially this failure is obvious during mechanical operations.
One more special thing about it — it’s extremly sensitive for successes and failures during the exploration phase. There is a reason for that: exploratory process can be dangerous, and if something is threatening during it — it’s better to back of. And thinking is also considered an exploratory process, an abstraction.
  2. The second hemispheres is concentrated more on execution of something, on operationg on already known, explored territory. An example could be playing a guitar: while you’re learning — the first hemisphere is working, but once the skill is there — the second hemisphere comes into play and the person starts being able top improvize and improve the technique

Conclusion:

  1. If you want to discourage someone from being successful in a particular area of knowledge — just expose to them a threat during the exploration phase.
  2. Software engineering work would better be split on 2 phases: preparation and execution, as recommended in Code Complete
