Battle of The Websites: Naked Juice vs. Odwalla, Stitch Fix vs. Trunk Club, Adidas vs. K-Swiss, and Priceline vs. TripAdvisor
In this month’s Battle of the Websites, we’ll take a look at the homepages of eight highly popular brands. We’ll start by looking at the juicy goodness of Odwalla and Naked Juice, move into the world of fashion, starting with Stitch Fix and Trunk Club, then analyzing Adidas and K-Swiss, and we will end our website battle with two leading travel websites, Priceline and TripAdvisor. We’re analyzing these pages for ease of navigation, uniqueness of design, engagement, storytelling, and brand messaging.
Let’s dive in — may the best homepage win!
Naked Juice vs. Odwalla
Naked Juice and Odwalla are two of the most popular juice and smoothie brands that you’ll find at your local grocery store. Both homepages will likely make you crave a smoothie, but let’s take a look at what makes the design of each site unique.
Interestingly enough, both homepages share the same layout. They both have a rotating header showcasing their latest flavors and products, followed by a panel highlighting their juice flavors, and then, a panel that has a background of fresh fruit — Naked Juice with strawberries and Odwalla with a mix of four fruits and veggies.
What makes the sites different? After a closer look, smaller elements stand out to differentiate the two sites. Odwalla keeps their color palette very simple, and their fonts are crisp in blue, white, and gray. Naked uses contrasting colors down the page to make each section pop, integrates different font styles, and incorporates elements such as banners, icons, and unique drawings.
Winner: This round, the winner is Naked Juice. Their unique colors, fonts, and images make their homepage stand out against the competition.
Stitch Fix vs. Trunk Club
Hiring a personal shopper can be expensive, but companies such as Stitch Fix and Trunk Club make it affordable with personal style subscription services. The two brands have the same product, but showcase them in individual ways.
Trunk Club keeps their website minimalist with a color palette of black, dark gray, beige, copper, and blue. Blocking each section with a neutral background makes it easy to read and easy to navigate down the page. Leading with a well-known brand helps gain customer trust and Trunk Club is owned by Nordstrom, so they integrate that into their messaging. They also highlight their benefits right on the homepage so that users can get a full understanding of what the service offers.
Stitch Fix keeps their website simple, but with pops of color drawing your eye to their different style offerings. All of their images are on off-white or gray backgrounds, but the clothing they show off is bright and colorful. Similar to Trunk Club, they lay out their benefits as well as how the service works. Their messaging is more customer-focused, touching upon the partnership that develops between a personal stylist and a client as well as their inclusive offerings for all ages, sizes, genders, and budgets.
Winner: This round the winner is Stitch Fix. Their simple layout with pops of color to highlight what matters most, as well as their customer-focused messaging, differentiates them against their competition.
Adidas vs. K-Swiss
One way that brands market their products is by hiring influential individuals to sell it for them. Influencer marketing isn’t new, and it is definitely here to stay. Major shoe brands such as Adidas and K-Swiss leverage influencer marketing, and they highlight that on their homepage.
Adidas leads front and center with their early access information for the new Yeezy’s — the sneaker designed by Kanye West. They focus on street style and athletes with their images, models, and color scheme on their homepage. Overall the Adidas homepage is simple, easy to navigate, and directs users to their shoe of choice right on the homepage — an easy user experience.
K-Swiss is a brand that saw an untapped opportunity leveraging entrepreneurs and CEOs as their influencers. Their messaging appeals to young entrepreneurs and millennials because their models are relatable. The colors on their homepage are unique — orange, red, yellow, and blue, and they stand out. They block off sections with the bright colors and clean images, which are followed by each new collection. Much like the Adidas homepage, the layout makes for a smooth user experience.
Winner: This round, the winner is K-Swiss. Although the Adidas site is crisp, clean, and appealing, the K-Swiss homepage incorporates unique colors, relatable images, and storytelling to draw the visitor’s attention to their newly redesigned products.
Priceline vs. TripAdvisor
Booking cheap travel online is easier now than ever before. With companies like Priceline and TripAdvisor, you can book vacations in minutes. These two sites will get you to the same places, but what makes one website different from the other?
Priceline keeps their homepage simple and straight to the point. Their menu is clear and easy to navigate, giving you the option for hotels, flights, hotel + flight, cars, and cruises — basic needs to get everyone to their destination. Their color scheme is classic — white, black, blue, and green, which makes everything easy to read. They have deals throughout the page ranging from bonus savings to cheap hotels and exclusive in-app deals.
TripAdvisor has a bit more color on their homepage. While at first glance it looks overwhelming, TripAdvisor has actually laid out their homepage in a way that makes it easier for visitors to navigate. At the top, they give the option to enter your travel destination, with similar options to Priceline such as hotel, flights, and cruises. They also add in things to do while on vacation such as activities and restaurants. For visitors who are looking to book a vacation but need inspiration, TripAdvisor has grouped popular locations together based on interest. Some examples are top beaches, most romantic destinations, cities for music lovers, and cities with ancient history.
Winner: This round, TripAdvisor is the winner. Their colorful yet neatly organized travel options make the experience enjoyable for everyone, whether they know what they want out of a vacation or if they’re just browsing. The navigation of the homepage is easy for anyone, and the travel options through TripAdvisor seem endless.
