Basic layout & Background settings in Wix Editor (+ Secret Tip for the most useful functionality)

After my first experiences with Wix ADI I made my way back to Wix Editor as I needed to edit the text fields. When I was going to switch between ADI and Editor interfaces I was warned that once I make some changes in Editor and I save the page within the Editor, I won’t be able to get back to the ADI interface. This means that the artificial intelligence will no longer be able to help me with the website editing — I will have to manage it with my own intelligence :) … damn it!

First I did not know where to click…

I must admit that getting familiar with Editor UI gave me a hard time.

That huge amount of settings surprised me a lot. It reminds me a bit of the settings in WordPress Page Builder in wp-admin or in Photoshop. I am not saying it’s bad, it’s just a little more difficult to figure out what each icon means and does. And what can I change and where. Simply trial-and-error.

How to change the layout from full width to narrow

My default layout is set to fullscreen (based on the original template built by ADI). I wanted to try how my page would look like in narrow layout.

Default full width layout

That’s why I started looking for a way to do it. First I was hoping that there is some global setting that will change the whole layout of the website, but sadly, I did not find anything like this. So I tried to approach it differently.

Once you click anywhere on the website area, editing options relevant to the selected part of the website are shown — e.g. Header, Footer etc. Other areas are referred to as Stripes. You can reduce the size of the header image with the title by clicking on Stretch icon, where editor provides you with 2 options — either to narrow it to the Page width or stretch it to the Screen width, if you want to get the opposite effect what I want to achieve. It is a simple setting, but I had a problem to mark the required area that I wanted to edit with the cursor. I did not expect I wouldn’t be able to click “correctly” on the largest, central part of the Page where header image is located. But the editor kept selecting everything else just not what I wanted.

Change into a narrow layout

In my template for a photographer, I also changed the look of the Strip Background over the header image. It’s the background that belongs to this particular section of the layout. Once again, you can access the editing functionality by clicking on the relevant section, or alternatively by right-clicking and selecting Change Strip Background item. As I have the background between Header and photography set to fullscreen, the strip that is being edited is stretched to the full width of the screen.

There is a great selection of backgrounds of different colors and styles available. You can even choose moving pictures, your own images or videos (even though I can’t imagine a video in such a narrow stripe). Stripe Background color can be changed via Color Picker. The settings contain also an option to adjust the image transparency, its color background etc.

As I said, the number of settings available is almost the same as in the Photoshop.

Regarding the time needed for the editing… I would do it quickly if the editor wasn’t that slow :) Originally I thought that the slow response of the builder and page freezing in the browser were caused by my old slow performing computer. But similar problems happened again even after I started using my new Surface that is several times more powerful than the old computer.

I found the most useful functionality in Wix Editor

There is one functionality that you will always be using in Wix Editor. This functionality will become an integral part of your website building and you won’t be able to imagine your daily work with the editor without it. It is the most useful feature that will save your entire website from disaster on numerous occasions.

Let me introduce you Undo. Get familiar with it thoroughly because I guarantee that you will need it ;)
