Today I had a look at the process of adding the most basic parameters and logos in the two most used website builders.

How does it work in Squarespace templates

Site Title and Tag Line

Site Title is used universally across the entire website and it is a mandatory field. It can be your business name or you can fill your own name here. In the @Squarespace, the Site Title can be set within the page configuration -> Design -> Logo & Title -> Site Title / Tag Line.

In my case, I used my name Victor Jakobsen as the Site Title. The template design determines where the Site Title is displayed.

My name as the Site Title

Tag Line relates to the Site Title directly as it is basically a brief page characteristics so that visitors know what the website is about. The Tag Line is usually:

· website description (e.g. Car rental)
· core blog idea (e.g. check my WebsitesHate.me publication: How to be online without loosing hair)
· job description of website owner (e.g. Architect & designer)
· motto

How to turn on Tag Line in the templates

Tag Line is an optional info i.e. it doesn’t have to be filled in. Some Squarespace templates have Tag Line enabled right after it is entered, but for some templates you need to enable tagline in the template settings: Design -> Style Editor -> Header Layout section -> Tagline Position -> pick the Tagline position from the dropdown menu.

How to enable Tagline in Greenwich template which is hidden by default

I chose the Top Right Tagline position.

Enabled Tag Line

Note: Some Squarespace templates (e.g. Pacific) are designed without Tag Line, which means it will not appear even when it is filled in and it cannot be turned on.

Link between Site Title and Logo

The logo itself can be inserted into the template in the same place as the Site Title and the Tag Line. Once you upload and save the image, the logo will replace the Site Title. Site Title will no longer appear on the website. Never, unless you remove the logo.

Site Title replaced by Logo

I tried to find an option in the Settings to enable both Logo and Site Title, but with no luck. Then I tried to search in Squarespace support how it can be done. And I came across a tutorial Adding a site logo based on which I realized this is really not possible?! The video recommends as „a solution“ so that users upload logo which has Site Title already incorporated in its design. I mean directly in the logo image.

Neverthless, Squarespace has one advantage when speaking of logo — it allows users to create a simple logo, if they don’t have one.

But note that it’s gonna be really ultra simple logo as you can add just a several symbols and a few basic settings like font type, color and size of text or symbol. But in case you don’t have a logo yet, it can temporarily help you.

How does Wix work

Site Title/ Business Name and Tag Line

When creating website via Wix ADI (Artificial Design Intelligence) you need to enter the Business Name right at the start, as it is included in the Wizard that provides you with various questions. Based on the responses to these questions Wix ADI generates a website for you.

Business Name is just a different name for the Site Title. Normally its the name of website, business or website owner.

Adding Tag Line is very simple; in editor, below the Business Name setting, there is Tagline setting where tagline can be turned on by filling it in.

Everything in one place

The advantage of Wix is that all the basic Header settings (i.e. Business Name, Tagline, Logo etc.) are located in one place. There is no need to click through various sections in sidebar in order to turn on/off the display of particular website elements that is the case of e.g. Squarespace.

In Squarespace templates, the Tag Line can be edited in Design -> Logo & Title settings, but to enable/disable the display of tagline you need to go to Design -> Style Editor.

Link between Business Name and Logo

Logo can be added to your website either directly via Wizard, or later on during website editing stage (right after Wix ADI shows you the first draft of the created website).

When the logo is entered, it is displayed by default and the Business Name remains hidden. But what is the most important — logo does not replace the Business Name, and therefore you can turn it on after. Your website will then include both Logo and Business Name simultaneously.

Note: I see this as a big advantage compared to the Squarespace where you can’t display both things at the same time.

Wix also allows you to link logo with another page (e.g. Homepage), custom URL, a document and so on.

Linking Logo

Color palette based on Logo

When building website via Wix ADI Wizard, there is a feature allowing you to generate website’s color palette based on the colors included in your logo. This feature is great for those users who don’t want to spend time on searching for an appropriate color combination, or overall website design. Wix ADI does it all for them.

Although a more experienced designer or developer normally does not need to generate color palettes, I recommend to try it at least for inspiration. The colors can be changed at any time anyway.

My test page with color palette generated based on logo. White, light green and brown colors dominate.

Squarespace or Wix: Which website builder is easier to work with?

It’s hard to say which builder has a better logic for setting the Site Title/Business Name, Tag Line and Logo. Each of builders applies different solution, so it is really up to the user which builder will suit better.

However, I personally like Wix more for these particular settings.

Especially because Wix allows you to add and display both Business Name (Site Title) and Logo, so there is no need to interfere with logo design by inserting Site Title text into the logo image itself.

Which Site Title and Logo solution do you like more? Do you think these settings are easier in Squarespace? Or would you rather prefer Wix?

Let me know in the comments below!
