Welcome to another lil World Wide by Webspinner piece :)

Last week, I got to head to Mary’s Underground (for the second time ever) to see Teenage Wrist — it was … something, for sure!

The Show

Futureheaven opened up the night and, unfortunately, there weren’t too many people in the crowd yet to see their set. Their music was quite a bittersweet joy to see — I don’t really know how much of shoegaze is for me, but they were a really nice way to explore that. If shoegaze is for you though, their ability to work with different instrumental layering is just so wonderful. They’re quite an atmospheric band and I’d love to see them play a headline show — I’m very curious about how they’d put their music’s world together visually for their own crowd. In saying all that though, they do, suffer from a couple of things: their music felt a little bit repetitive, there wasn’t really anything that stood out from their setlist as like ‘the song’. They were missing a bit of energy or personality to really elevate their set as well. But ! I think they definitely do have ‘something’ and I really want to see them grow more comfortably into their sound and who they are supposed to be.

This year, I’ve somehow seen Brooklyn Comic three times — in very different lineups and at random ‘sure I’ll come to this’ type shows. They’re so full of energy and have so much fun while they’re on stage which is great to watch. They’re such a fun mix of personalities — it’s like… a band where everyone looks like they could be in very different bands making very different music, but they come together and create what Brooklyn Comic has become. I’ve come to notice they have a very consistent stage presence and put on a pretty consistent show, which is good because it means you never really miss out but in a way, but … it can get a little predictable? In saying that though, I’ve pretty much seen them 3 times in like the span of 4ish months so I wouldn’t really expect there to be massive changes in their performance, and even with this — they put on quite a strong show regardless. I will also say, they make that rough midwest emo type pop/punk that sounds very familiar and I’m so curious to see what they’ll do to expand and really create their own sound in the future.

Headlining, were of course, Teenage Wrist who came out and killed it! I had so much fun watching them. The atmosphere they created was so wholesome and special to be a part of. Despite them singing sad songs, they had an incredible energy that they fed back and forth between themselves and the crowd. The crowd, by the way, were just so happy and overjoyed to be experiencing such a wonderful show and that really added to the vibes of the night — I LOVED that. I’d never heard (or heard of) Teenage Wrist before this, but I loved the way they carried themselves on stage and their ability to turn these sad, rough songs, into one big party. It’s bittersweet but in a really fun, very balanced out way. They reminded me of so many little bits and pieces of iconic bands I’ve seen and love.

And look, they aren’t doing anything insanely new or unique, but their lyricism was so fun to follow. They tell such interesting, personal stories and have such a freshness even with the heavy weight of it all that made them feel the tiniest bit fairy tale. I do also give that to the venue — Mary’s Underground has the perfect vibes, lighting, and stage that really give any performance a semi otherworldy feel that I love. The venue really made this show unique. Teenage Wrist’s set was a lot of fun, I’m so glad I was introduced to this band live, because I got to really see them, who they are, their interactions, and the way they deliver it all.
