Learning online is a fantastic opportunity for those who want access to education without the logistical hassles of a traditional classroom schedule.

Follow the six tips below to ensure a successful online learning experience.

1. Have a wired high speed internet connection.
I hear all the time from people who expect a high quality video feed using a public wireless connection. Dun dun dun…nope. You really need to be wired in and with the highest speed you can get. Why wired over wireless? Generally the speed is faster and more consistent and having a consistent connection is very helpful in preventing distractions and lags in the video/audio feed.

2. Get a headset with microphone.
I know your laptop has a built-in microphone and for certain activities it’s perfectly adequate, but if you want the best experience, especially when learning a language, purchase a headset with microphone. The sound is clearer and you’ll get less negative audio feedback.

3. Update your web browsers.
Like any technology, it usually works best when you’re using the latest version. So update your web browser and pay attention to the internet browsers recommended by your online learning company or school.

4. Test your equipment before your scheduled time.
This has been my biggest frustration so far. If you don’t test your webcam, audio or internet connection…or only test it five minutes before your class and you encounter a problem with your connection or equipment, it will prevent you from participating in your scheduled appointment. Check your equipment and check it often.

5. Find a space in your home or office with the least distractions.
You are learning. Setting up your computer in the living room where the TV is on, the dog is barking, and the kids are climbing on your lap—or at your office at work with the door open and colleagues coming in and out asking you questions— is not an ideal environment to get the most out of the experience. If at all possible, try to create a space for yourself where you can devote your full attention to your instructor and yourself.

6. Take it seriously.
Seriously, just because it’s online doesn’t mean it’s casual. Put as much effort into it as you would if you were sitting in the same room as your instructor. Take notes if that helps you. Ask questions. Be involved. Learning online provides an opportunity for you to connect with experts all over the world. Enjoy it and learn as much as you can.

I hope you found these suggestions helpful. Please share with others who may be learning online. We, the instructors, appreciate it!
