April Begins the Unfurling

March has tiptoed out and quietly closed the door. April has begun with sunny breezes and windows-wide-open warmth. But April in the North Carolina mountains is a trickster. No sooner do we decide to get out the warm weather clothes than the weather turns chilly again.

Yesterday, April 2, it was 75 degrees. The nights have been warm enough for a window open in the bedroom for sleeping. Then, a rainstorm came through after midnight, dragging with it a cold front. Today the high will be 53, with a cold wind that makes it feel much colder. Tomorrow 45. Friday 49 with a low of 29 and a chance of “wet snow”.

But I am not discouraged. This is just the birthing pains of spring. The baby is coming; it’s just taking its sweet time (like my own babies did!)

In the meantime, we are seeing signs everywhere of the unfurling of the season. The ferns are sending up their shoots, called fiddleheads because of their shape. They are supposed to taste like asparagus, but I will refrain from eating…
