Box Store Dahlia Tuber Update
My experiment with big box store dahlia tubers
A little over two weeks ago I bought twelve Dahlia tubers from Walmart. These came in a bag of two roots each for about six dollars. If you order Dahlia tubers from a reputable company you pay between six and thirty dollars per tuber so I figured, why not give it a shot and see what happens?
Upon opening up the bags and looking at the Dahlia tubers, it was what I was kind of expecting. Most of the clumps of tubers consisted of tubers with broken necks. After snipping those off, I checked to see if there were any eyes. About half of them had eyes I could see so I had some hope. A few of the tubers were rotted except for one small tuber.
I wasn’t sure what exactly my plan was with these plans should they grow, so I only planted them deep enough to cover the tubers, but not where the eyes were (some didn’t have any). I’ve never grown Dahlias from cuttings, but since these are experiments anyways, I wanted to start them shallow in case I decided to give that a shot.
As you can see in the pictures, some of them look great. Out of the twelve tubers I planted, eight are growing…
