it’s never easy when a beloved hen dies

Authors photo of Icy and her babies

Circle of Life (R.I.P. Icy)

Icy wanted to be a mother.
She sat three clutches of eggs
before hatching out some lovely
white puff balls of babies.

The drain on her body, too much.
She passed away overnight
quietly.

They won’t remember her —
Brave. Persistent. Lovely.

The babies run in circles
in her absence, then follow
the rooster.
