Cold Breeze

A Poem

The cold breeze is back
to tickle my neck
and give me goosebumps
that make my hair stand,
attentive to this chill
that wakes me up
and reminds me
that life is happening
and the heat has only
delayed my eyes
from opening

Awakened, as cold air
fills my lungs and purges
all that was waiting
an unclogged trachea
feels like freedom
from the abyss
I was coughing in
even though I was just full
of the world’s ephemera
the discarded hot air
like a balloon filling me up
and swelling me until
I burst

But the cold breeze comes
and pulses life back through me
a crisp reminder of self
an earful of whistle
a mouthful of gasp
debris for the human mind
cast back into me from
the depths of nature
