Easter Memories
Family Traditions
The most significant of my family’s annual gatherings
Was Easter
At my Aunt Dot’s house(uncle Eddie lived there too)
A tradition that spanned over sixty years
My first memory was of it being held
In a small apartment(even to my seven year old eyes)
Then moved after only a couple of years to its final location
A home in a neighboring community
Why this became the most important celebration for us
I never knew
And all adults there at the beginning have died
So it will remain one of life’s little mysteries
I should clarify something at this point
Everyone there was from my mother’s side of the family
It would take a much longer story to explain why
Suffice it to say it was an Irish sort of thing
From a child’s perspective
Easter meant we could end our Lenten abstinences
Candy a common item forsaken for the season
Could now be eaten
Starting with devouring the delights in our Easter baskets
We could begin going to movies again
And the long long Holy Week services were over for…
