Funny You Should Ask…

Or Where has all the Laughter gone

Inspired by my friend Deborah Camps’ recent piece on the lack of laughter these days read her story here, I felt I needed to weigh in here.

At our home, we do not really appreciate so-called modern humour, which is trying too hard and where the timing is usually off.

These days at our house, we find that we do not want to watch anything depressing, dramatic, sad, meaningful or serious.

In the hunt for happy-go-lucky entertainment, we watch a ton of cat and dog videos, happy music videos, old dance videos and we often fall back on old movie and TV series faves.

Old TV series we still like: Seinfeld, WKRP in Cincinnati, and a whole batch of Britcoms: The IT Crowd, Black Books, Are You Being Served, Fawlty Towers, Wooster and Jeeves, Black Adder, Black Books, Father Ted, Absolutely Fabulous, The Vicar of Dibbly, Chef.

Movies we will watch over and over: Some like it Hot, The Seven Year Itch, His Girl Friday, Heavy Trip, Leningrad Cowboys Go America, Hamlet Goes Business, Burn After Reading, Red (the first one), Little Miss Sunshine, High Anxiety, Intolerable Cruelty, Young Frankenstein, Still Crazy, The Producers (the original one), Blazing Saddles, Silent Movie, Beetlejuice, Cold Comfort Farm, Scoop, Hot Fuzz, Run Fat Boy, Run, Tootsie, Mrs. Doubtfire, Empire Records, This is Spinal Tap, A Mighty Wind, Best in Show, La Cage aux Folles, Freaky Friday, Fanboys, School of Rock, The Rocker, Heavy Trip.

Not all the movies listed are true belly laughs, I suppose, but personally, I find all of them very funny. My husband, Bruce, disagrees with some of my picks, saying that they are entertaining but not hilarious, in his view. Oh well, you can’t please all the people all the time …
