It all started when my current partner moved in with me, about 11 years ago, and started putting his plants in the ground in my yard on the West Coast of Canada. He had been carting them around in pots for seven years because he constantly moved around and he never felt like he was in a place long enough, or permanent enough, to plant them. Not long after moving into my house, he started planting them, and it was then that I realized that he clearly wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

He also started his own landscaping company and started bringing cast-off plants home from his client's houses. Bit by bit and month by month, a beautiful garden oasis started to take shape.

Flower gardening wasn’t all that we did, however. We both had a keen interest in growing food as well, but we never had a conventional garden plot. We built raised beds all over our yard using granite rocks that Chris salvaged from a road construction project that led to one of his client's properties. He would bring his small trailer with him to the job and, on the way home, would load it up with the huge rocks.
