Seriously, does the building reminiscent of a bunch of bananas or a flower? The architect, Mishe Safdie, would be upset if he knew I’ve asked this question. The reason I’m bringing attention to it is that in my opinion, the ArtScience museum deserves stronger acknowledgment and admiration.

The exterior of the ArtScience Museum followed one of the key Safdie’s design principles of reflecting South-East Asia’s cultural and civic context. Allegedly the architect significantly changed the early design of the building after he got consistent feedback on the shape that it looks like a bunch of bananas. The existing building shape should resemble a blooming lotus which I see clearly. Ten irregular petals were assembled of 5000 prefabricated “Lego blocks” which was a major constraction challenge, but the effort was for sure worth it. Each petal is an exhibition hall and when you are inside the interior place you are in a phantasmagoria space feeling. Effortlessly, you are tiny and inside a flower. This way ArtScience museum architecture fully serves the mission to allow a visitor to explore art, technology, and creative courage coming altogether.

Well in line with Asian gardens traditions The ArtScience Museum is surrounded by two ponds with water lilies. This is one of the best look-out points for the city business district to enjoy Singapore’s landscape with a stunning mix of modernity and nature.
