Some Suggested Changes For Medium
And Other Thoughts
My first suggestion for the Medium gurus, please eliminate the “Follow” category completely. It serves no useful purpose.Replace it with a unduplicated Readers total. Only a small percentage of my current “followers”, and yours too probably, have ever read one of my submissions. And if they haven’t done so already, are unlikely to do so in the future. Of my four thousand supposed “followers”, probably only two hundred and fifty have read one of my pieces. My usual readership total for any one writing is between seventy and one hundred and fifty. Occasionally the number is somewhat higher.
As for me, I only follow someone after I have read one of their pieces, and/or they have read one of mine. I don’t read or follow people who are not members of Medium. Even, as is more often happening, someone subscribes to get notice of my work, but doesn’t read anything of mine, I ignore them. When I have some extra reading time, which is not often the case these days, I will choose to read something from an author new to me. If I like their writing style, I will then follow them. If they reciprocate, then I might also subscribe to receive notice of their future submissions.
Another suggestion has to to do with the“boost” program. I will admit at the outset that I’m biased, never having been boosted. It is a flawed…
