Summer Garden Sonnet

for my husband

In the author’s garden

These clover-mingled grass blades, each a leaf –
The fluttering needles, branches of the trees –
Each green-gold disk that climbs our sugar peas –
These chlorophyll-laden potato factories –
That trumpet vine, a sphere of leafy lace–
And blades of lilies that surround this place –
See all those parsley leaves and safir, too? –
Add hostas, eggplants, tomatoes? — Yes, a few.
Just don’t forget the peppers, sweet or…
