The Hospital Garden

I spent more time taking pictures of the garden in front of the hospital than I did at my test in the lab.

An Unexpected Find

I was surprised at the size and beauty of the landscaping in front of the hospital. The facility was relatively new, and I had never been there. The huge glass sculpture's focal point among the greenery made me wonder how it withstood the elements. It was quite unusual and large, and it certainly grabbed my attention.

The circular shapes mimicked the living blooms around it, and the long fluted pieces reminded me of horns making music along with the birds serenading me. Of course, they were reminiscent of lilies or bluebells with their fluted bells. The spikes on top were like the tall stalks on some of the plants. But the size and colors demanded notice.

Some patients needed transport, or visitors awaited rides. Staff had a place for a much-needed respite. The garden provided a lovely place to wait. Maybe its beauty alleviated pain. I know it made my time there far more relaxing and enjoyable than I anticipated. I didn’t know those shrubs were there. It was a treat.

Maybe we need to be more expectant of finding good things, even in places where pain and grief may be common. Being able to photograph beauty wherever it surprises us helps us to remember. Just a garden by the hospital? No big deal? How many people went there without giving the landscape any consideration?

For me, it was a microcosm of delight. My hospital tests ended up being OK, too. I’m still shooting pictures and finding more gardens.
