Do you know
how hope dies?
It shatters into
a million shards
sharp enough to
needle out of your heart,
while you learn to freeze yourself
against the sting,
and take refuge in the spaces left
between the punctures.
It blasts behind your eyes
into a blinding light,
blurring the curtain between
reality and imagination.
And then,
it shapes your fears
into wings,
so that
you fly with them,
forever.
This is
what I know
of hope’s demise —
real slow,
but, before you know.
