Tiniest Toad

Herding like cattle

yet jumping like grasshoppers

thousands of small toads.

My daughter and grandkids came to visit and stepped onto the lawn before I could warn them to watch where they were treading. A mass of tiny toads appeared overnight, and they were determined to reach the amphibian pond that lay tucked in our woodland. My daughter screeched and froze in place, clutching her hands under her chin. She must have stayed that way for five minutes or more until we stood on the driveway and shooed the tiny creatures around the terrified giant in their path.

’Til next time — be careful out there.
