Tropical Storm Ernesto has been threatening Puerto Rico for several days. It is scheduled by the National Hurricane Center to start blowing its modest winds (30–40 mph ) and heavy rains later today and during the night. It is taking an odd trajectory and may ignore the forecasts and go where it pleases!
Considering we survived the 155 mph winds of Hurricane María a few years ago and our grandparents topped that by experiencing the 200 mph winds of Hurricane Felipe Segundo in 1928, this is not expected to be a big deal. Of course, with hurricanes, you never really know.
So I grabbed my camera and reviewed the vegetation around the house. I didn’t expect to lose anything in such a puny storm, but I feared for the seasonal spray of tiny white flowers on the Christmas palms.
I planted these trees about 20 years ago. At the time I was in the midst of a project to grow ornamental palms as a business. It was a modest success but not enough to make me want to continue.
