Our trip to Italy was everything we had imagined it would be and more. Maybe that was partly because we had so little to compare it to. Although I had travelled as a very young woman before my partner and I met, we had done little afar since then. In fact, when our second daughter graduated in 2007 from university in a town some 1240 km away and we flew there for the ceremony it was our first time on a plane together in almost thirty years of marriage. Crazy. Flying to Northern British Columbia means going over some incredible scenery including ocean, rivers and mountains. All I could think about however was the plane crashing into one of these peaks and the survivors having to eat their dead (like the 1972 Uruguayan rugby team that crashed into the Andes and featured in a documentary titled “Alive”).

OK, a little dramatic. But it was my first time on a plane for a long while…

We did travel again subsequent to that, to our daughter's graduation and wedding in Toronto, and to see our grandchildren there. But this trip to Italy was to be our first major adventure, the kind I had only dreamt of. Inspired by our daughter and her family who were going to be there for the summer of 2018 for a wedding, I decided we would make the trip too.
