For me, it was a way to relax and escape a hectic world. I might go so far as saying I owe them my life.

Photographing them came later.

I did not start my photography career as a bird/nature photographer. My photography career began in the Fashion industry. Even though I photographed nature when I could, it did not become my focus until I gave up that crazy world of fashion photography.

Photographing birds became my focus by accident. Little by little they lured me into their world and before I knew it I was photographing them without a reason why.

Back then, I was completely unaware of the distinct species of birds. I had no knowledge of their habitats, their diets, their roosting places, or even the locations they preferred for building their nests.

They drew me in slowly and taught me a much-needed connection to Nature. They taught me to slow down, to be patient, to find moments of peace in waiting, and a way to step out of a crazy world.

Each encounter presented an opportunity for discovery and learning, especially about the environmental issues facing bird populations and the destruction of so many of their habitats.

There was always a new species to observe, interesting behavior, their habitats, and their excellent skills.

Birdwatching without instruments is just as rewarding. Spotting elusive species and honing one’s identification skills provides a sense of accomplishment as well as excitment. It is a challenging hobby or profession, but definitely a rewarding one.

Why birds? Because they provided me with a never-ending journey of exploration, awareness and a challenge that would last for my entire life.
