I remember most the reverence of walking with my Grandma around her garden. She knew all the plant’s names and talked about each one as if they were a personal friend.

“This one is a show-off,” she mused. “Her large round flower cluster teases you with pink and blue petals.”

I think of Grandma’s wrinkled hands, warm smile, and lessons as I check my newly planted hydrangea. Nothing showy yet, but I’ve learned that we all bloom in our own time.

I watched her separate the daylily bulbs, explaining that they needed more space and room to be themselves. I know that feeling of community but autonomy.
