Winter Walk
This winter has really been wearing on me. Wandering around in the apartment just can’t compare with getting out in the fresh air. But even though it has been a scant snow year the temperature has remained really cold — too cold for me to walk around in. I hadn’t been outside any further than the end of the parking lot since October and it was getting to me — causing me to feel bad.
It finally got so bad I actually went to bed at 7 pm because I felt like I couldn’t stand to sit in a chair any longer. When I woke up the next morning I just lay there for a while kind of dreading to get up and start yet another long day.
But get up I did and after having my morning coffee, I looked at the weather forecast. Seeing the temperature was going to be in the mid-40s I decided I would put on a warm jacket and chance taking at least a short walk.
As I stepped out the door at 1 pm, I had my doubts that I would even be able to make it to the end of the street and back. I just felt washed out.
When I got to the corner, walked across the road, and up onto the trail I thought that I would just stand there for a few minutes and then return home. But then, I felt sort of a burst of energy as the fresh air kicked in — so I continued walking — and the next thing I knew I was on the bridge watching the creek flow by. After a few moments, I decided I had enough energy to walk on down the trail to visit my favorite old tree that I call Triple Pine.
After a short rest, I turned around and headed home. It was 44–45 degrees the whole time I was out but I never once felt cold. What I did feel was rejuvenated.
