Zen Frogs in Harmony

Last night under vast boughs of
velvet heaven
we sat by an ancient pond —
two Zen frogs squaring off
witnessed only by a lily pad.

Can father & son
ever escape such intimate
confrontation in love’s quest
for understanding?

You were as good as
your word & listened
like a much older man
humble, penitent, wise even.

Together we climbed a ladder
Grace herself threw down
& healed the burning words
said in rashness & anger.

In the end, we disappeared
to drown never come up
for air again — 30 years since I was
advised to leave the world
I am father to three
wondrous souls instead.
