Week in OSINT #2019–09
Databases, an archive, tips and tutorials
Okay, here we go again! It was another great week and I’ve got some nice links to share. No tools this week though, since I didn’t see any pop up in my time line and I didn’t have time to go over GitHub myself. There were loads of pentesting tools that were shared, but nothing of interest for this newsletter. Well, better luck next time! This week’s overview:
- Shell Companies
- Stoic Approach to OSINT
- Terrorism Databases
- Image Manipulation
- Flow Charts
- Webcam Archive
Tutorial: Shell Companies
Last week our ‘Big Sister Upchurch’ shared a tweet about a nice write-up in regards to how to investigate shell corporations. So if you have never dealt with such companies, do check it out and read about the tale-tell signs and how to investigate further. And do check out other articles by AML Toolbox if your interest lies in financial investigations.

Blog: Stoic Approach to OSINT
Secjuice posted and article last week where the writer takes you through an investigation by going back-to-basics, and see how it works in OSINT. Drop the tools, go back to the basics and see what can be found without gathering massive amount of information via automated tools. A must read in my opinion!
Site: Terrorism Databases
The website ‘Radicalisation Research’ has published a PDF with 30 data sets and databases that are out there for people who are looking into terrorism or radicalisation. There is everything from statistics to risk maps of specific countries that are dealing with a form of terrorism.

Tip: Image Manipulation
This short video by First Draft gives some hints and tips in regards to spotting media that might be cropped or edited. For some people nothing new, for others some little tips in regards to verification.
Tutorial: Flow Charts
These next two tweets contain some absolutely awesomeness! I am not going to simply include the flowcharts he or she made here, because TheGelios deserves some serious credit for this! Two wonderful flowcharts, one for investigating email and one for domains. Well, part 1 for domain names that is, so more to come! I know what I’ll be printing out and hang on my wall!

And to top it off, here something that people will appreciate. The nice reactive OSINTframework, but with some other links in here! Just a little bonus link, also made by TheGelios.

Archive: Webcam Archive
There is someone who once in a while sends me a link for my Week in OSINT newsletter. And nearly always these links are absolute gems! And last week Lisa Schwartz has shared a link to a site I didn’t know about, AMOS, or Archive of Many Outdoor Scenes. This is an archive run by American Universities and they collect and archive images from open webcams from all over the world. The project started in 2006 and is still archiving publicly available camera images, and currently has over 1,100,000,000 images stored for your viewing pleasure, most of them in the USA. Not all coordinates are correct, so do use this with some caution. Or just for fun…👀
And that’s it for this week! Closing off here, I’ve got other things to do… Til next Monday!
Have a good week and have a good search!
