Week in OSINT #2020–12
A short news section, followed by a new section in this weekly news letter.
Hello readers, welcome to the Monday! I didn’t have a lot of time finding loads of new resources, most of it due to the fact I had some issues getting into a new routine by working from home. But the routine is here and I’m already keeping an eye out for new items! But first, let’s have a look at last week’s links:
- Facial Recognition
- OSINT Around the World
- Geolocation and Newsmedia
- Corona Section
Stefanie Proto has been sharing some links again last week. Her first tweet was about newspapers from all over the world. Especially handy nowadays with the global crisis we’re facing. Too bad though that most of the sites in this list don’t offer HTTPS, so make sure you don’t use any search for any sensitive topics while using a public Wi-Fi. Then again, you should use a VPN connection in that case anyway, or at least run HTTPS everywhere to make sure your connection is always encrypted!
Media: OSINT Around the World
MwOsint was hosting an online presentation for Penn State University some time ago and last week they posted it online. He talks about the different platforms and languages used in the world, takes you along search engines, shows you some tricky captcha’s and give some hints and tips on corporate information.
Article: Geolocation and Newsmedia
Twitter user Bearhunt11 has written another awesome article, on how he used a minimal amount of information to find the location of a specific house within the Netherlands. Despite the fact that the people involved tried to stay anonymous, it was seemingly easy to find the exact location. Well worth the read 👍
Brandon Silverman from CrowdTangle shared their new public platforms to track down the social media posts about the Covid-19 or Corona virus. So keep up to date with live feeds on a global scale (good luck keeping track!) or by selecting your country to keep up to date with the local posts.
I decided to add a new section to my newsletter where I can share things you can do while we are still in the grip of the pandemic. Whether you still have to work and look for some distractions, or you have some extra time to read, study or even watch a movie, it can all be in here. So let’s start by re-sharing one of my own blogs from December last year.
| OSINT Movie Time
Want to take some time to see some OSINT based movies? Why not check out one of these movies and series on Netflix!
| Corona Fake News Hackathon
Loránd Bodó decided to spend some time to fight the vast amount of disinformation and fake news about Corona/Covid-19. If you want to help out spread the word, please make sure to request access to his Slack channel!
| Film Festival
The International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) has opened up 200 documentaries for the public, free to watch. So whether you are looking to kill some time, or want to get some more insight in specific topics, just head over there! Via: Malachy Browne
Nixintel shared a few nice links to keep you busy during these weeks. Want to test your OSINT or geolocation skills? Why not have a look at one of these online platforms!
Have a good week and have a good search!
