Sleeping in until 11. Not getting out of bed until noon. Not actually getting dressed until 1. This rather sad and lazy timeline of events usually sums up most of my Saturdays at Marquette.

Waking up hungover, or just waking up late to catch up on lost sleep over the course of the week is a common theme among students at Marquette. “I usually don’t get out of bed until at least 11 on Saturdays,” says student Brendan Attey. “I really like to catch up on sleep, but sometimes I still feel it a little bit from Friday night.”

Some students are early bird go-getters, and like to get their day started off early. Junior Gretchen Lundstrom, for example, likes to get up and do something fun on Saturdays.

“Sometimes I’ll go down to the Third Ward and maybe get some homework done. Or I’ll just go to hang out and get off campus for a bit.”

There are plenty of places to go downtown for students looking to spend their Saturday off campus. The Third Ward, the Milwaukee Art Museum, Bel-Air Tacos, just to name a few. Brewers tickets are usually pretty affordable for students, so that is always a very fun way to kill a couple hours. You can find an extensive list of fun things to do in Milwaukee here.

Gretchen also likes what campus has to offer. “Campus is also buzzing on certain Saturdays,” she describes. “Sometimes it’s fun to just go hang out at the AMU or just hang in the dorms, if you’re an underclassmen, with you’re friends.”

Depending on the time of year, there are many things to do on Saturdays. If the weather is nice early on or later in the year, Bradford Beach is always a popular spot to visit. Usually once a year most of the student body will make their way down and take over the beach, which always provides smiles, laughter, and a couple good stories to walk away with.

During the Winter and in the early Spring, nothing tops a midday Marquette basketball game. Weather permitting, there is always some large gathering occurring somewhere. Then the walk to the game is just as memorable as the game itself. Nothing beats hanging out with 5,000 of your closest friends at a parking lot party, then making the trek down to the Bradley Center to watch our beloved Golden Eagles face their foe.

“Saturday game days are absolutely my favorite part of the year,” explains Attey. “I love basketball, so that makes it even more fun. But everyone is in such a good mood and it’s always so much fun.”

That is one of the things which makes Marquette special. Basketball game days and the community felt among the student body is truly incredible. “Marquette is a really special place, and it is so different from most other schools,” says Lundstrom. “Just the community here and having all of Milwaukee at our disposal at any given moment, there is no other place like it.”

Basketball/the beach isn’t quite your style? No problem. There are always things going on in Milwaukee, and there are so many things you can do on your own or with your friends. There is even an ultimate bucket list of things to do while you are at Marquette.

After a long day, Saturday night eerily resembles Friday nights. Students making the Krawl up and down Kilbourn in search of parties, and others making their way home. Once again, you get to hit your head on the pillow knowing that you have all of Sunday at your disposal.
