Boston in the Fall

My first trip to Boston was in November 2016, the week before Thanksgiving. It felt like a late summer afternoon — perfect weather for wandering The Freedom Trail in Boston, eating Italian food in the North End (Boston’s Little Italy), including cannoli from famed Mike’s Pastry, a North End tradition since 1946.

I explored Harvard campus across the Charles River in Cambridge, tailgated Ivy League-style (less enthusiastic than Big Ten tailgates, but more involved than I’ve ever seen Stanford campus on game days), and watched The Game — the historic Harvard vs. Yale rivalry.

Mr. Bartley’s in Harvard Square

Postgame, I enjoyed burgers at Mr. Bartley’s Burger Cottage, a Harvard Square institution & student favorite serving up some of the best burgers in the Boston area since 1960. Three generations of the Bartley family still own and operate the restaurant, cooking fresh, homemade burgers, onion rings, sweet potato fries, frappes, and lime rickeys in a dining room decorated to look like a dorm room, filled with posters, bumper stickers, and funny signs.

Some of my favorite memories from the weekend include a Sam Adams brewery tour, a trolley ride from the brewery to Doyle’s in Jamaica Plain for chowder and lobster rolls, and spending my final day at the Museum of Science, which is located on a plot of land in the middle of the Charles River.
