A DIY tincture with orange and coffee flavor
What’s the point of making a jam, if you can make a tincture or liqueur?! If you agree, get two oranges, a few roasted coffee beans and a bottle of vodka / a high-proof booze of your taste.
In this case, the quantity of sugar matters! If you put a cup of sugar, you’ll get a liqueur. If you put 3–4 tablespoons, you’ll get a tincture.
The goal is to suck the flavor of oranges and coffee, so let’s start.
- Wash the oranges thoroughly. Cut them into equal parts.
- Insert coffee beans into the oranges.
- Place them in a canning jar.
- Add some sugar and vodka/other booze. The higher the proof, the faster the flavor leaches out.
- Close the lid making sure the cover is tight.
- Shake a little to help dissolve the sugar.
- Store in a cool, dry spot away from the heat and moisture of a kitchen.
- Sometimes shake the jar until the sugar is totally dissolved.
- Allow to set for the 20–30–40 days until the vodka turns to a pale lovely orange color and has a coffee-orange fragrance. You can taste the tincture every once in a while to make sure you don’t let the flavor get too crazy.
- To use, remove the orange and coffee beans. DO NOT SQUEEZE the oranges! (that will make your drink murky). Strain the liquid through a fine-meshed sieve into pretty clear bottles or a clear glass decanter.
- Serve at room temperature or slightly chilled.
