While all year-long students look forward to the summer, the time with no tests, homework and school stress, I have found that many people including myself, my friends, and many of you on the Trill app have agreed that parts of summer can be a really tough time.

And yes, while Instagram and Snapchat posts may paint a picture of the perfect summer full of laying on the beach, eating ice cream, or traveling, there’s definitely room for an expectation vs. reality check on social media.

There’s no school to force everyone to spend time with each other. Rather, planning hangouts become harder and must be more intentional. I have heard this reiterated time and time again from others and have experienced it myself, especially since it can be hard to reach out to people over the long break when everyone is out of sync. It can even be hard sometimes to find things to talk about without everything going on in school.

Furthermore, for a lot of people, summer means too much time alone with their thoughts, and with that also comes boredom and loneliness. For me, the extra time means overthinking, contemplating each little detail of every interaction. But, I’ve found these methods really helpful to make the best use out of my summer and interact more meaningfully with those around me.

Here are the tips for making the best use out of your summer:

  • Find hobbies to spend time on, whether they are volunteering, trying different arts, or even taking a class just for fun. Hobbies make more meaning out of your time and also are a great way to find a community to interact.
  • Get out of the house — even if it’s just to go for a walk or to help your parents mow the lawn. It’s nice to do something strenuous outside sometimes and soak in some much-needed Vitamin D (but don’t forget sunscreen).
  • Start a book club with your friends — it will be something you can discuss, even if you’re miles away.
  • Get a job or do small paid tasks for those who need it. Summer free time often leads to going out more which is expensive.
  • Make time for your community or find some new ones. Trill is a great place for that. Join a community on Trill.
