World Suicide Prevention Day
Trill Project aligns our big update with World Suicide Prevention Day
If you are suicidal, there are resources for you. You don’t have to go through it alone. You matter!!
Content Warning: discussion of suicide
Worldwide, a person attempts to take his/her/their own life every 40 seconds.
As a society, we hear statistics like this all too often. And while we are collectively (and rightfully) horrified to discover facts like this, we usually, shortly after proceed on with our lives and forget (or at least try to forget) what we’ve learned.
It’s like we are frozen and moved to inaction by how big the problem feels. We think to ourselves… what could we even do to make a difference anyways? I used to feel guilty over how numb I was with regard to facts like this.
You see, I never used to think suicide was preventable. I never used to think it was something we should (or could) even talk about…
I still vividly remember the day I learned my uncle had taken his own life.
I grieved for what was an acceptable amount of time, but then I put back on my “game face.” I convinced myself I was fine. I even started to believe it.
But then I would have time to myself. I would feel pits in my stomach that wouldn’t go away, anger in my chest that I couldn’t understand, anxiety in my hands that made it hard to write, and a desire to some days just not get out of bed.
Trill Project has changed me. It has taught me that stories have power, that my voice has power, and that I deserve to be heard.
Every individual who is apart of the Trill Project community inspires me- every single day.
Trill Project is a first step to improve the dialogue around mental health and suicide. Our update is intended to honor WSPD. I deeply believe in the power of sharing (of course, when you feel ready/comfortable/safe), the equal value of listening, the importance of checking in with others, and the necessity of getting help when you need it.
We don’t need to wear “game faces” all the time. We are all valid. We are all beautiful. We are all in this together.
I never thought this story was one that I’d be sharing. But Trill Project continues to transform my expectations of myself and others. Thank you for listening to me.
Let’s keep the conversation going on Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, and Facebook. Share our resource and raise awareness for WSPD by posting a story, images, or a video. Tag us, tag your friends, and link to update Trill.
