Tranquility and Wellness in the Sonoran Desert

After more than a year of COVID pandemic protocols and the accompanying stress, my aunt and I decided that a spa getaway was the ideal opportunity to dip our toes back into the traveling pond and indulge in some much needed self-care. Thirty-five miles north of Pheonix, in aptly named Carefree, we found CIVANA - a wellness resort on 20 acres of land in the Sonoran Desert. Wellness at CIVANA is defined by four pillars: movement, spa, nourishment, and discovery. This multidimensional approach allows guests to handpick the classes and workshops to suit their goals and fulfill their vision of a wellness retreat. For us, it allowed my aunt and me to design our own experiences around our individual goals and interests.

Before arriving, we worked with the guest experience team to reserve the maximum of two classes daily and schedule our spa appointments. The 100+ weekly class schedule includes a variety of yoga classes, studio gym workouts, hikes, outdoor activities, guided meditations, and interactive workshops. Most classes and workshops are included with your stay, but some do have an extra charge. The offerings change regularly depending on the season and the expertise of their Visiting Wellness Guides. Due to the popularity of the spa and some unique classes (hello, Mindful Mixology!), you are strongly encouraged to make those reservations as early as possible. Once on the property, you can add classes to your schedule and make changes.

Arriving at CIVANA, I felt an immediate sense of calm. The spacious, well-lit lobby was filled with neutral colors and inviting textures that created a welcoming atmosphere to kick off our stay. Additionally, at check-in, each guest receives their own reusable water bottle that can be refilled at any of the water stations throughout the property.

During my stay, I participated in morning meditation sessions and used the on-site meditation labyrinth. However, my favorite mindfulness class was the floating guided relaxation. Participants create their own hammock or floating cocoon from the silks suspended from the yoga studio ceiling. The weightlessness of the cocoon helps remove physical pain points and allows the body to completely relax. The evening class is the perfect precursor to a good night’s rest.

Another priority for my wellness journey was movement. I was particularly excited to try wall yoga. The wall yoga studio has a series of straps along the wall that are utilized to support you in poses that may not typically be accessible with only a mat. It made inversions a piece of cake! We also took to the pickleball courts for a beginner lesson and some friendly competition. I recommend the paddleboarding excursion at Bartlett Lake for those who want a change of scenery. The small group size and helpful guides made it a memorable experience and a unique opportunity to experience the natural beauty of the Arizona desert.

Lastly, a wellness retreat is not complete without a trip to the spa. The CIVANA spa is a sanctuary within the resort. With a separate outdoor pool and the ability to order food and drinks, it is easy to spend an entire day there. The spa menu includes a variety of massages, body wraps, and facials. The aqua therapy circuit is also available and intended to help increase circulation and promote relaxation.

After spending nearly a week at CIVANA, it was hard to return to the real world. Fortunately, the benefits of taking this respite for myself lasted well beyond our stay. In the CIVANA tradition of closing each day with a gratitude circle, I express my gratitude for the hospitality and care I experienced during my time at CIVANA.
