Learning to let the small things be great, too
In Awe of the Details
In January 2024, I recorded the audiobook version of my first poetry book, Horizons (which is now available!). I discovered that I use a phrase often in my poems; I hadn’t noticed it until I was reading them all together. I am often “in awe” of the little things in life. I find wonder in my children and Mother Nature’s small details.
At first, I thought this was a negative thing. The word “awesome” is such an overused word. It is supposed to be used for BIG things — God is awesome. The universe is awesome. We are supposed to be struck with such wonder it leaves us speechless: awe stops us in our tracks.
Then I realized how neat that fact really is. How the gift of being struck with wonder, being struck with awe by the little things — how the gift of sobriety and living in the present has opened my eyes to process the small things and let them bring me joy on a daily basis. What better way to live, than to find God’s awesome wonder in the small tidbits, the details that are taken care of each day?
Even though my life hasn’t always been painted in rainbows and daisies, I have chosen to look at the positive in life — even through my challenges.
