Why I created my startup Welltended

I would venture to guess that you have probably considered owning a plant. Perhaps you have one already, or maybe you’ve experienced the sincere disappointment of bringing home a brand new plant and having it soon after meet its tragic, untimely demise.

A few months ago, I personally went on such a — seemingly simple — quest to bring a collection of greenery into my Chicago apartment. Tired of the winter conditions that kept me from spending much of any time outdoors, I was ready to fill my apartment with the shades of green I was so missing.

But, I soon became utterly shocked at how difficult it actually was to source the plants. I spent hours traveling from Home Depot, to local nurseries, to home decor stores, in order to source the needed supplies. From there, I had to lug everything (large bag of soil, included) on public transportation, and I made a total mess of my apartment once I actually did get everything home. It was truly frustrating to source an ideal houseplant for my apartment, and it was further difficult to find a container that would actually match the design aesthetic of my home (read: something a little more exciting than your standard red terra cotta pot). Plus, at the end of it all — after all that — I soon realized how difficult it is to get accurate information about how to care for the plant, and ultimately to keep it alive.

I didn’t understand why on earth it should be so difficult to select and source a plant in a container that you’re proud to display in your apartment or office. This is how my startup Welltended came to life.

Plant life offer so many benefits, and we can understand intuitively how beneficial it is to bring some nature and wellbeing indoors. My main goal for Welltended is to make it easy for city-dwellers to experience this sweet relief that plant life offers. Stay tuned for plant decor, inspiration, and even some science and humor behind indoor plants. We’ll introduce you to the team (which includes an expert in plant biology, a software developer, and a lover of wellness and home design), and share our progress along the way. In return, we’d also love to answer any questions you might have, so please also check out and join our Welltended community.

Take care!
