10 Reasons Spring is my Favourite Parenting Season

It’s finally here! The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and my lawn is starting to resurface from months covered in snow. Hello spring, I’ve seriously missed you : )

Spring rarely seems to get the credit I think it deserves. It doesn’t have the heat and beach days of summer, the crunchy leaves and sweaters of fall, or the cozy hot cocoa and snowflakes of winter… But, if I had to pick a favourite season to parent in, hands down it’s got to be spring. The mild weather doesn’t require toques and mittens or a million layers of sunscreen. And I always feel like it’s everything’s fresh and new — especially after the LONG winter we all seemed to experience this year.

So, I’m welcoming spring with open arms and ready to give it a little love. Here are 10 reasons spring is my absolute favourite parenting season.

No more winter bundling

Goodbye winter jackets, snow pants, and hats! I’m done wriggling unwilling fingers into mittens and shoving little feet (as gently as I can) into boots. I’m pretty excited for daughter (and myself) to be rocking our uniform of short sleeves and sneakers every day.

The GOOD time change

I know, I know, spring forward means we technically lose an hour of sleep. But as a parent, it means my toddler’s regular 6:30 am wake up call shifts into a leisurely 7:3 am sleep in. I know she’ll gradually adjust back to her early bird ways, but for now, I’m reveling in that extra bit of sleep in the morning.

Flowers

They’re pretty, they’re colourful, and they just make me happy. My daughter’s happy to spend time digging in the dirt and helping me hone my green thumb.

Afternoons at the park

No more cold, winter days trying to fill the afternoon’s with as many creative indoor activities I can come up with. We’re ready to head to the park and spend countless hours swinging, sliding, and hop-scotching.

Evening light

What’s that? The sun is still shining after dinner? It’s the perfect season for evening walks — something that make my dogs very happy, and gets those last few beans out of the kid before bedtime.

A whole new season of craft ideas

If I have to cut out one more snowflake or colour one more snowman, I might lose my mind. I’m more than happy to shift our crafting subjects to Easter eggs and butterflies.

Endless fruit options

Berries, melons, and stone fruit, oh my! It’s that wonderful time of the year when fresh and lovely looking produce is back on display at the grocery store.

Outdoor meals

Whether I’m sitting on a restaurant patio or roasting a hot dog over our backyard fire pit, outdoor meals are my favourite. The fresh air and the view somehow make the food taste that much better. Bonus points: whatever mess my kid makes requires way less clean-up.

Bike rides

Being able to hop on our bikes, or slowly and patiently walk beside my daughter on hers, is the best way to go anywhere. It’s also a great way to go nowhere and just take a tour of our neighborhood.

Backyard hangouts

There’s no limit to the time I can spend relaxing in the backyard while my daughter explores and the dogs roll in the grass.

So, have I sold you on the merits of spring parenting yet? Why do you love spring?
