Sunscreen is an essential item to protect you and your family from the potential damaging rays of the sun, especially during the hot, sunny days of summer. That being said, many of us believe in these five common, but untrue, sunscreen myths.

1. You only need to wear sunscreen when it is sunny

Although cloud coverage does generally reduce a person’s exposure to UV rays, approximately 80 percent of the sun’s UV rays can still pass through during overcast days. This means that it is still necessary for you and your family to wear sunscreen to avoid serious sunburns.

2. Water resistant sunscreen means it won’t wash off in water

This myth is completely false; in fact there is no such thing as waterproof sunscreen. Although there may not be a 100% waterproof sunscreen, you do still want to choose a sunscreen that is water resistant if you are planning to go into the water. The key to protecting you and your family is to reapply the sunscreen every couple of hours.

3. Sunscreen doesn’t expire

Although I’d hate to admit it, like most people, I have multiple old, somewhat used, bottles of sunscreens hidden away in my closet. Even though it may seem like a waste, it is important to look at the bottle for an expiry date and if it has expired to throw it away. Typically sunscreen is conditioned to last up to three years, but always follow the expiration date printed on the bottle.

4. Dark skinned individuals do not need to wear sunscreen

Many individuals believe that if you have a darker skin tone, you are not at risk for developing skin cancer. This is a dangerous misconception as, regardless of race, anyone can get skin cancer.

5. Forget about hats and sunglasses, sunscreen gives you all the protection you need

Although an essential item, sunscreen doesn’t fully protect you from the effects of the sun. It is important that you and your family have sun protection that includes proper hats, sunglasses, and sun-protective clothing to ensure you are properly protected from the sun’s rays.

During these hot summer days it is critically important for you to keep yourself and your family members safe from the sun. Take time to pick out the right sunscreen and apply often so you can take full advantage of enjoying the summer sunshine.
