Wearing the correct sun hat can protect your child from getting painful and damaging sunburns. But the truth is, getting your child to wear a hat can be even more challenging than actually choosing the hat. Here are a few easy tricks to remember when purchasing a sun hat, plus some ideas to keep it on their head!

Choose the correct size

Getting a good fit is key for getting the right protection. All children’s heads are different, so the size of their head may not match their recommended size by age. The best way to get the correct size is by measuring the circumference of your child’s head and choosing the size of hat based on that measurement.

Brim size

The wider the brim, the more sun you block. Quick tip: a brim with a downward slope will provide even more sun protection.

Pick a hat with a chinstrap

Chinstraps are a great way to make sure a hat actually stays on your child’s head. But don’t try and force the chinstrap on if your child hates it! It will only make them frustrated and more resistant to wearing a hat.

Make it cool

Small kids want to be just like their parents, so this tip is for you. Wear a hat. Not only will this encourage your kids to wear a hat when going outdoors, but it will also make it second nature to them.

There are a variety of different hats and patterns to choose from, so when going out and purchasing a hat, take the kids along! If they have a choice in what hat they’re going to wear, the more likely they are actually going to wear it!
