About to head out for a camping weekend? Every family knows what the essentials are, but did you know that a first aid kit falls under necessities, too? We never plan for accidents to occur, which often makes it hard to know what to bring along. That said, first aid kits are handy to have in any outing for those ‘just in case’ moments. You’ll always be glad you brought one along! Here’s a list of some things that you should consider having in your kit, and why:

Bandages and disinfectant

By far the most common accidents are minor cuts and scrapes, so having bandages on hand to cover these up and aid the healing process are important. Be sure to have multiples of different sizes of bandages, as regular bandage changes are important for proper healing!

Triangular bandages

There are several uses for a triangular bandage, but the most common would be its usage as an arm sling or as a dressing to stop bleeding. These bandages come sterile, so they are time sensitive and should not be used past its expiry date!

Tweezers

These are useful for any wounds that involve a puncture to the skin that are safe to remove, such as splinters. Puncture wounds that are too deep should seek immediate medical attention and should not be attempted by someone untrained!

Sterile gloves

Open wounds need to be treated right away, in as clean an environment as possible. This might not be feasible in the outdoors, but having sterile gloves prevents direct contact and decreases the chances of infection.

Important phone numbers

  • Some numbers that might be good to write down are:
  • Emergency contact information
  • Local nurse’s/physician’s hotline
  • Poison control hotline
  • Local police department
  • Local fire department

If you’re able to go the extra step, taking first aid and CPR classes are always encouraged! These classes teach you how to go further in case the injuries you encounter aren’t the basic ones as described above. Accidents and injuries aren’t fun, but it doesn’t mean we can’t prepare for them when they do happen. Make sure your first aid kit is all set before you go!
