Summer’s got a mean reputation for being the best season. What’s not to love? Longer daylight hours means opportune barbecue season, perfect temperatures for swimming, and last but not least: camping! It’s one of those activities that give families plenty to remember and look back on in the years to come. While it’s an activity that requires quite a bit of effort, the rewards are priceless. Here’s a few tips and guidelines that can help you while you plan for your camping getaway!

Your equipment:

Are you camping out in a tent or RV? Regardless of which you choose, make sure there’s ample room for everyone involved. Nothing’s worse than not being able to get appropriate rest for the day ahead. After all, spending all day under the sun can be exhausting!

Make sure you and your family’s sleeping gear is accounted for as well. There are singular sleeping beds or inflatable mattresses available, so decide on what best suits you and your loved ones ahead of time. Don’t forget about pillows and blankets, too! An evening outdoors is a lot colder than an evening at home, so take the drop in temperature into consideration and make sure everyone stays warm and dry overnight!

Have you considered bringing a tarp? It’s a highly recommended piece of equipment to bring along! It’s a multifaceted object that can cover gear that needs to remain dry in the occasional rain, or serve as a makeshift floor so everyone can enjoy a picnic sitting on the ground. There’s plenty of uses for one, and you definitely won’t regret bringing one along.

Your food:

Camping shouldn’t stop your family from eating a great meal! The key to ensuring a plethora of delicious food on your trip is the early planning that goes into it.

Choose a durable cooler that can store any meats you plan on cooking. Make sure you have a separate container for raw meats, as well as beverages. Segregating foods prevents cross-contamination. For meats, make sure that you marinate beforehand so that you won’t be short on spices when you’re at the campground! Better safe than sorry, as they say.

Consume perishables first! Coolers can’t replace the efficiency of refrigerators, so prioritize foods that may spoil over non-perishables such as canned foods.

Everything else:

Here are some other tips that are important to remember, that don’t necessarily require packing!

As with all outings, it’s encouraged that you bring a first aid kit along because you never know when it’ll come in handy! We never plan for accidents, but it’s good to have a back-up plan in place.

The outdoors is shared with its natural inhabitants. It’s important to teach your children that while cartoons often depict wildlife to be friendly and cute, it is best to stay away from them for safety. Sometimes wild animals may be drawn to the scent of food, so never leave any food out unattended overnight so as to not draw unwanted attention!

And lastly, being able to camp in the outdoors is a privilege. Once your trip is over, be sure to take away everything you brought along to keep the area clean and safe. Camping etiquette is in place to make sure that everyone else can enjoy the great outdoors, just as you and your family have!
