Delighting in Nature’s Magic

It’s always good to take stock of what you know, and then see if you can have an experience to change that knowledge. Travel is a great way to do that. Seeing new places, talking to new people, experiencing new things… all great ways to spark ideas and think about life in a different way. Chicago has been great for that already, and it’s been less than 24 hours since we arrived in the city.

So far (besides seeing our friends), I think the most exciting thing has been seeing my first fireflies. Last night we ventured out into the evening to find the local gelato place recommended by friends. It was 31 degrees (in Canadian) and ice cream seemed like a nice way to cool down on a hot night, our first in Chicago.

And then suddenly, there were little pops and streaks of light all around us. Not clouds of them, but just glimpses here and there. A sense of childlike wonder flooded in to override all adult logic. Part of me wants to know exactly how fireflies work. But that’s not the part that’s winning.

Because I know that really, it’s fairy magic. And I will appreciate the magic of the moment for as long as possible.
