Headaches and dizziness are just a couple of examples of what you can experience when you are dehydrated. As temperatures increase, it’s becoming even more necessary to ensure you and your family are staying hydrated. Here are a few simple ways to make sure that you and your family are getting enough water during the summer months.

Always carry a water bottle

This is one of the easiest things to do. Having consistent access to water makes it more likely that you will drink it. If you are planning on going on a hike or a lengthy beach trip, an easy way to stay hydrated is by freezing some bottles of water the night before and carrying them with you. Throughout your adventure, the ice will melt and keep the water cold for your enjoyment.

Eat the right food

20 percent of your daily water intake is from food. Choosing foods that have a high water content, for example fruits and vegetables, will make it easier for you and your family to stay hydrated without constantly sipping on water.

Avoid alcohol

This one’s for the parents. Alcohol is a diuretic, which means it causes you to pee — a lot. More alcohol equals less fluid in your body,. So if you are going to enjoy a cold adult beverage this summer, make sure you have a glass of water for every drink you have.

Look at your urine

I know this might be a little unsettling, but looking at urine is an easy way to tell if you or your kids are dehydrated. Your body adjusts the amount and concentration of urine to adapt to how much fluid you are consuming. If your urine is pale yellow and you are urinating often, you are likely sufficiently hydrated. But if you’re urinating a small amount and the urine is a dark colour, it’s a sign that you are dehydrated and need to drink water ASAP.

Keeping hydrated is an essential part of staying safe while being in the sun. Make sure you talk to your kids about how important it is to drink water. A great way to get them involved is to let them choose their own reusable water bottle, which will help them get excited to drink water!
