When we think of family activities for camping, we often think of stargazing, making s’mores, and sharing campfire tales. While those are definitely fun activities to do, they’re mostly activities to do in the evening. That leaves a whole lot of room for fun during the day, because summer means longer daytimes. Not to worry, here are some ideas we’ve gathered to add to your fun-filled summer camping getaway!
Hiking
Easily a crowd favourite, hiking is a fun activity that can be done by nearly everyone, and is a perfect way to bond while unplugging from electronic devices. There are different difficulties of hikes, so they can be leisurely strolls by the riverside or a little more challenging with equal amounts of incline and decline.
Regardless of you and your family’s experience with hikes, this activity is best enjoyed while there is sun out! This can make room for more mellow activities in the evening when everyone might want to wind down from a long day.
Reading a map and compass
An oldie but a goodie! In the age of technology and GPS, there might not be an immediate need to learn how to read a map and compass; however, there are some dense forest trails that do not have the convenience of reception! *Long sentence — see if you can break it up into two. Knowing how to navigate in the absence of wifi and electronic devices will prove beneficial in instances like these, to make sure you and your family stay on track! Besides, it’s a cool and indispensable asset!
Scavenger hunts
This classic game is a must for families! It teaches children the necessity of teamwork, and it’s a fun teaching modality that parents can have fun with. For example, incorporating how to read a compass and map can be part of learning how to find the next hint. The possibilities are endless!
*Note that if the area for the hunt is rather large, children shouldn’t be left unattended even if they are using the buddy system with another child.
Learning how to tie knots
Your kids don’t have to be in a scout program to know how to tie knots. In fact, there are several tutorials online that you can grab to use exactly for this occasion. Just bring some rope with you when you pack, and you’re ready to go!
