Would you like to learn how to pack smart?

Another outcome of all my travel time lately, is that I’ve had a lot of opportunities to practice packing. Read on for my 3 most useful suggestions.

1. Packing smart = take about 50% of what you think you need.

Seriously. Put everything you think you want to take and put it on your bed. Then put back about half. As long as you’ve chosen things that are mix-and-matchable, you’ll be just fine. Your back will thank you, as you won’t have to deal with bags that are bigger and heavier than they need to be. And you’ll end up with less laundry when you get home which is also great.

2. Packing smart = don’t trust the weatherman.

Every trip I’ve been on in the past two months, the weather has been drastically different than what the weather people promised. By all means pack as light as possible, but even if you’re headed to a warm climate, make sure you’ve got one warm item of clothing. Just in case. If nothing else, you can use it along your travels for a makeshift pillow.

3. Packing smart = pack vertically.

If you’re going to be living out of your suitcase, then you might want to pack vertically. All that means is making it so that you can see each item when you open your suitcase, and don’t have to go digging around through everything to find something on the bottom. Your stuff will stay folded, and you will be able to see what you have at a glance.
